Located on the same square, there is the Basilica of Virgen de los Desamparados and very close to it we nd the Santo Domingo Convent. e historic city centre hides many interesting churches, like Santa Catalina, San Nicolás or San Martín.
Civil architecture plays a key role in the history of this city. e most prominent building is the Llotja de la Seda, a gothic style building erected in the late 15th century that has been declared a World Heritage Site. It used to be a place for commercial transactions and contains true treasures, such as the Hall of Columns, the central bell tower, and the Consulate of the Sea pavilion.
The city council is in the very heart of the city, integrated in the building complex of the Real Casa de la Enseñanza (Royal House of Teaching) built in the 18th century. On the other hand, modernism plays a key role in some buildings like the Central Market, made of iron, glass and tiles, the Columbus Market, and the North Station.
Nowadays, the City of Arts and Sciences constitutes one of the symbols of the city. It is a futurist complex that includes the planetarium/cinema L’Hemisfèric, the Palace of Arts, The Science Museum and the Oceanogrà c Universal Park. Plus, the city has a wide variety of museums.
